It's red. But not like a pretty red. More like dried blood. Or brick red. Kind of an orangey, sad, not as deeply saturated as you want kind of red. You have been warned, so I don't want to hear any tears.

To really pump up that volume in Red 40, you'll want to combine it with Red 27. This will give you a deeply saturated color with lots of pop! Red 40, when combined with Blue 1, will make a gray color, so unless you want to make gray flowers for mothers day, it's best to use Red 27 and Blue 1 to make purple blends!

What are lake colors?

Lakes are stable, insoluble, chemically organic colorants for cosmetic products like bath bombs and bubble bars. They are made by spraying water soluble dyes onto a substrate which makes the colorant easier to disperse into products.

  • Bold

Lakes are our favorite way to color bath bombs and bubble bars because they are beautiful and bold!

  • Easy

Lakes are extremely easy to use and don't require blooming in water, or dispersal in oil before using.

  • Stable

Compared to water soluble dyes which are UV and pH sensitive, lakes are much more colorfast and stable.

About Lakes

  • The great thing about using lake colorants is that what you see is what you get--if your mix looks lighter than you want, just add more lake colorant!

  • Unlike dyes, which can very easily create an oversaturated mix, lakes can be used in much higher amounts with a much lower risk of staining.

  • Polysorbate 80 should always be used in conjunction with lakes to correctly disperse color!

  • Suggested usage is 1 gram (approximately 1/2 tsp) of lake for every 500 grams of bath bomb mix

Lakes in Bath Bombs

Unlike dyes, lakes don't need to be bloomed! To use them in bath bombs, we suggest this method

  • Combine your dry ingredients (minus your citric acid),
  • Add wet ingredients to your dry ingredients (minus your binder)
  • Mix until fully combined
  • Add your lake colorant and mix
  • When the color is fully mixed in, add your citric acid and binder, then mold

You'll have the smoothest bath bombs that are 100% free of speckles.
